Biography of Limp Bizkit

Limp Bizkit

Is Limp Bizkit primed to take over the world? Record-label executive, music talent scout, video director, tattoo artist, and LB frontman Fred Durst would certainly like you to think so. He's got some good reasons, too, in case you need it: In seven short years of existence--and a mere three studio albums--his band has hit the top of sales charts, modern rock charts, and video playlists, garnering a huge fanbase and riding a seemingly unstoppable tidal wave to success.
LB formed in late 1994, when Durst and longtime pal, bassist Sam Rivers, decided to start a band. Rivers's cousin, John Otto, a former jazz drummer, was brought on to handle rhythm duty. Guitarist Wes Borland and former House Of Pain member DJ Lethal were recruited soon after, and a lineup was solidified. The band christened itself Limp Bizkit--in homage to the supposed condition of a pot-smoking friend's brain--and began to play local gigs in earnest.
It was at one of these gigs that LB got their first stroke of good luck. Up-and-coming rawkers Korn, making a tour stop in Jacksonville, decided to get a few tattoos in their downtime. Durst, who happened to be an ink-slinger at the time, made buddies with bassist Fieldy and guitarist Head while fixing them up. The new friends promised to hang out again the next time Korn passed through town. By the next time the Korn Krew came to Jacksonville, Durst had a Limp Bizkit demo to play for them. The suitably impressed Fieldy and Head passed the tape on to Korn/ Sepultura producer Ross Robinson, who in turn was blown away by the band's sound.
Due to the enthusiasm of Robinson and Korn, Limp Bizkit landed tour spots with Korn pals House Of Pain and the Deftones. The ensuing buzz resulted in swarms of offers from record labels; Durst and his band chose Flip Records, which--in another lucky move--was in turn affiliated with major label Interscope, home to such superstar acts as Marilyn Manson and the Wallflowers.
LB's debut, Three Dollar Bill, Y'all, introduced the world to the band's screaming version of George Michael's pop classic "Faith"--complete with a raucous, bouncing, Durst-directed video. MTV pounced upon the goods, putting the tune in heavy rotation and granting LB a spot on 1998's Spring Break '98 fashion show. The Bizkit boys were clearly on their way.
June of 1999 brought forth Limp Bizkit's hotly anticipated sophomore set, Significant Other--which blasted upon the music world with the irresistible single "Nookie." Armed with an infectious hook and paired with yet another fun Durst-directed clip--featuring "Durst girls" dressed in knit caps and khakis, Wes Borland's black-hole contact lenses, and a wildly pogo-ing crowd--"Nookie" nudged Significant Other to the top of the charts for three simultaneous weeks. (The Backstreet Boys' Millennium eventually knocked it off the throne.) Durst was rewarded with a senior VP position at Interscope Records and was soon spotted around town with the likes of sexy actress Carmen Electra. A controversial set at Woodstock '99, in which Durst allegedly incited the crowd to riot, did little to dampen Limp Bizkit's popularity.
The band remained the hottest commodity in the rap-hardcore scene with 2000's Chocolate Starfish & The Hotdog Flavored Water and 2001's remix album New Old Songs--despite Durst's famous line, there's certainly no reason for him to feel "like a chump," now, hey?
