Biography of Bee Gees

The world may never forgive the Bee Gees for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack (1977), which embodies all that's now uncool about disco. It was glossy, silly (really, three chipmunk-voiced Australians coming off as bad street dudes?) and shamelessly bubblegum. It was also an impeccably-crafted record that had at least as much depth as the trendier dance music of recent years (say, the Pet Shop Boys), and far better tunes besides.
The Gibb brothers' career began with some of the quirkiest songs to come along in the Beatles' wake; their tunes were pure British Invasion, but the lyrics were wildly off-the-wall (of their first three American hits--"New York Mining Disaster 1941," "To Love Somebody" and "I've Gotta Get A Message to You"--somebody dies in two). This phase peaked with the obligatory Beatles-inspired double-album, Odessa (1967), which included three purely orchestral tracks, a lovely single ("First Of May") and an epic title track about an English shipwreck.
The Bee Gees' real undoing wasn't disco, but maudlin ballads. They were already headed in that direction by 1971 ("How Can You Mend A Broken Heart," "My World"), but the 1975 album Main Course pulled them out of that phase, with producer Arif Mardin making the unlikely but successful call of re-styling the Bee Gees as R&B. A much worse idea was the much-hyped Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band film of 1979, with the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton making an epic desecration of the Beatles' work. This time the backlash really was deserved; after a few more hits the group disappeared for much of the '80s. They still try for another comeback every few years, but their recent efforts are adult-contemporary fodder that lack the fun of their disco output and the quirkiness of old.
