Biography of Audioslave
The rock world wasn't ready to let go of Rage Against The Machine when frontman Zack De La Rocha departed in late 2000, but surely no one was expecting former Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell to team up with remaining members of the politically potent rock band (guitarist Tom Morello, drummer Brad Wilk, and bassist Tim Commerford).
Although the newly formed quartet made it clear that they were not the new millennium's Soundgarden or RATM, they weren't sure what to call their new project after facing legal issues securing the band names Civilian and Audioslave, both which were already taken. But an unsigned British band already going by the moniker of Audioslave eventually struck a lucrative monetary deal that allowed the Cornell-fronted American band to also use the name.
But even after they secured their name, troubles continued for the American supergroup: Just as Audioslave were slotted to play Ozzfest 2002, Cornell abruptly resigned from the band, mainly due to the continuous disputes between his management company, Rebel Waltz, and the management of the other members, Q-Prime. Six weeks later, Cornell rejoined Audioslave just as they were putting the finishing touches on their debut album, and the restored lineup collectively hired a third management company to prevent future problems. Coincidentally, Epic and Interscope resolved their concurrent custody battle by agreeing to take turns releasing Audioslave's albums.
Audioslave were less than thrilled when their unfinished demos were leaked onto the Internet during the writing/recording process of their self-titled debut, but they'd already overcome greater hurdles, like the breakups of their previous superstar bands, name changes, and management difficulties. And on the bright side, the huge number of people who downloaded these sessions indicated just how anxious RATM and Soundgarden fans were to hear Audioslave's material--basically a fine fusion of RATM's bombastic power-garage sounds and Cornell's enduring melodic wails. The album, produced by Rick Rubin (AC/DC, Aerosmith, Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, Slayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers), finally came out in fall 2002, proving that the trials and tribulations surrounding the inception of Audioslave were all part of a true labor of love.
